Music in Y2

Autumn 2

Over Autumn 2 our warm ups with music lessons focused on the difference between rhythm and beat, how to identify and create simple rhythms and clapping short rhythmic patterns.

For the main part of our music lessons we were introduced to our song for the Peace concert - Do They Know It's Christmas? We listened to the story of the song and appraised it, before learning the song and practising our performance skills. We explored how to use our voices expressively and creatively, and how to add appropriate actions to a song to help tell the story. To end this unit, we performed 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' to the whole school, alongside the actions that we created.

Autumn 1

Over Autumn 1 our warm ups within music lessons focused on using our voices expressively and creatively by speaking in chants. The children particularly enjoyed the game 'Hey, hey, look at me'.

For the main part of our music lessons we;

- applied music to our topic of 'The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark' and explored how music can be used to express light and dark,

-   explored key musical elements: pitch, tempo and dynamics

- were introduced to our key piece of music and composer – Night Ferry by Anna Clyne

- listened with concentration and understanding to our key piece of music - Night Ferry by Anna Clyne - and appraised it

- interpreted the story of the song Night Ferry and represented it through art

- created music in response to shadows and darkness.

Below are some examples of our applied musical understanding:
