Social and Emotional Education (RSE)

The aim of Social and Emotional Education (RSE) at Riddlesden St. Mary’s is to help pupils develop self-respect, confidence and empathy.  Pupils will learn about what makes healthy relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in a way that is age appropriate and sensitive to their faith.  This will include online relationships, and how to seek help if they feel unsafe.  Teaching will respect the diversity of families in our community.

Sex Education is not compulsory in Primary Schools and therefore the content of our curriculum focuses on Relationships Education.

Relationships education fits perfectly with our school vision – to enrich, encourage and enable – and also with our school values of respect, peace, courage, forgiveness, trust and friendship.

Our curriculum is an age-appropriate curriculum, taught from Year 1 to Year 6 and ensures progression in knowledge, attitudes, values and skills. Key texts for each them are used to support the delivery of Social and Emotional Education (RSE). Children visit six themes each year;

Autumn 1 - Marvellous Me

Marvellous me encourages children to be proud of who they are and explore their world. Learning about who they are and how they can be the best that they can be. Who helps them? What are their rights and responsibilities at home, school and the wider world?

Autumn 2 - Connections Are Key

Connections are Key teaches the children the value of relationships. It explores how to be a good friend. What is happens if bullying is observed and how this can be dealt with.  What do healthy and unhealthy relationships look like?

Spring 1 - Valuing Differences

Valuing differences is all about embracing our similarities and difference – the more variety the better society! Here the children learn how to respect one an others differences at home, school and the wider community. Seeing things from a different perspective and how to resolve conflict.

Spring 2 - Reach For The Stars

Reaching for the stars teaches the children about realistic goal setting. Developing a growth mindset, being resilient and persevering in the face of any obstacles.

Summer 1 - Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be Safe

Be happy, be healthy, be safe is exactly what it says in the title. Children explore the many ways to stay mentally and physically happy and healthy. They learn how to stay safe online and within the community.

Summer 2 - Growing and Changing

Change is inevitable and our children need the be equipped with the tools in order to cope with this - transitions are significant in the lives of children. This topic helps the children cope with change and prepare for any transitions big or small.

The nature of our curriculum ensures that by the end of Year 6, children are secure in their knowledge of each requirement.  In Nursery and Reception Social and Emotional Education (RSE) is taught through all aspects of learning and gives the foundations for the more formal teaching of this subject from Year 1.
